FREE - Saturday Silica Hazards in Construction - 9/28 Elmhurst, IL

Event Start Date: 9/28/2019 7:30 AM

Event End Date: 9/28/2019 12:00 PM

Each year, an unknown number of workers are exposed to the hazards of respirable crystalline silica. Some of these workers will develop a serious illness called Silicosis.  The Silica Hazard Awareness course teaches participants what silica is, identify when silica may be present, the hazards of working near/around silica and steps they should take to properly safeguard themselves when performing tasks that may have a silica exposure risk.

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • State the purpose of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and its enforcement duty under law
  • Define respirable crystalline silica and list its health effects
  • Recognize and avoid common respirable silica hazards
  • State procedures for preventing exposure to respirable crystalline silica
  • Identify engineering controls, work practices and personal protective equipment used to control silica hazards
  • List medical surveillance guidelines for silica
  • Locate OSHA Standards, Fact Sheets, and Compliance Guides

Target Audience: At-risk workers who work with, near or around concrete, cement, and stone, including foundry or quarry workers, as well as individuals who cut stone, manufacture building materials or carry out sand blasting.  This course is also suited to general construction workers whose jobs place them near those activities.
