The Silica Hazards for the Competent Person course is designed to provide the necessary information and training needed for an employee to implement their company’s Exposure Control Plan as required by the OSHA Silica Health Standard for Construction, 29 CFR 1926.1153.

Participants will learn the Health Effects of Silica, Competent Person Duties (Implementing the Exposure Control Plan), Equipment Requirements, Work Practices, Medical Surveillance and more. 

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • List project tasks with potential exposure to respirable crystalline silica
  • List the five health effects from exposure to respirable crystalline silica
  • State what controls might be used on the tools or equipment
  • State what medical tests will be done (on whom & when)
  • List the duties as they relate to:
    • Inspections
    • Implementing Exposure Control Plan
    • Ventilation Requirements
    • Water Requirements
    • Work Practices
    • Respirators
    • Housekeeping

Target Audience:   Forepersons, Supervisors or anyone that will be designated as the Silica Competent Person for their company

Language:   This course is taught in English.   

Prerequisites:   A laptop computer or a tablet that has a USB port or can receive e-mail is required. Students will also need to bring a copy of their company’s Exposure Control Plan(s) to use and review during the course.
